Podcast Show Notes

Multitasking seems like a great way to get a lot done at once. I mean we entrepreneurs are always looking to save time and get more things done. So if we can knock different tasks right after one another or at once – isn’t that a good way to increase productivity?

While multitasking might seem like you are accomplishing many things at once, research has shown that our brains are not nearly as good at handling multiple tasks as we like to think we are.

Definition of Multi-Tasking

In fact, some researchers suggest that multitasking can actually reduce productivity by as much as 40%!

Truth is – if you are a great multitasker then you are half-assing everything you are touching.

And before we dive in let me give you the definition of multi-tasking to see if this represents you –

  • Performing two or more tasks simultaneously
  • It can also involve switching back and forth from one thing to another
  • Multitasking can also involve performing a number of tasks in rapid succession.

Why Multi-tasking is a Productivity Killer

Well… It might seem like you are getting multiple things done at the same time. But what you are really doing is quickly shifting your concentration and focus from one thing to the next.

When you switch from one task to a completely unrelated task it makes it difficult to tune out distractions. It can cause mental blocks that can slow you down. Multitasking divides your attention and leads to confusion and weakened focus.

So today on this episode we are going to talk about multi-tasking and how it’s impacting your ability to get things done. But better yet I’m going to share a time-saving trick to be smarter about all the different things you have to do. So you can create a workflow that sets you up for success.

I’m going to drop you into the actual conversation Jenny Taylor and I had when she interviewed me for her Jenny Does Grace channel.

What are all the things you are doing right now?

To wrap up this episode I want you to take a moment and think about all of the things you are doing right now. Obviously, you are listening to this podcast, but chances are good that you are also doing several things at once. Perhaps you’re also working out, or driving, or checking your email, or folding laundry.

If you are doing several different things at once, then you may be what researchers refer to as a “heavy multitasker.” And you probably think that you are fairly good at this balancing act.

According to a number of different studies, however, you are probably not as effective at multitasking as you think you are.

How to minimize the negative consequences

To minimize the negative consequences of multitasking here are three things you can do:

  1. Limit the number of things you juggle at any given time to just two tasks.
  2. Give yourself the 20-minute rule. Instead of constantly switching back and forth from one task to another, try to fully devote your attention to one task for a 20-minute period before switching to the next task. So, instead of switching back and forth between writing email copy and creative graphics in canvas, spend 20-minutes on the one task before switching to focus your attention on the next.
  3. Lastly is my favorite which is batching. The main thing to understand here is that creating an efficient workflow and batching your high-quality work allows you to get more done in less time. In the end it keeps my to-do-task list very manageable and gives me so many more open pockets to create and take time to listen to podcasts or read or just spend open time for myself.

Where I teach about batching

I teach about Batching inside my Content Marketing Strategy + Planning System.

When you can schedule, batch your work, and evergreen your content you will save yourself hours of time a week creating valuable content for your niche audience to lead them into your sales process.

This batch method for content creation allows you, for example, to touch your blog, Facebook videos, Instagram Captions, and Weekly Emails just one day out of the month and have content scheduled for an entire month that allows you to release it from your mind for weeks at a time.

How would that feel?

So if you are interested in creating batch workdays and ways to expand your digital reach with less effort learn more about step three of my Stay in Your Lane Brand Method where I offer my Content Marketing Strategy + Planning System.
