Podcast Show Notes

Today I’m laying all my beliefs out there when it comes to why Personal Branding is Non-Negotiable when it comes to building a business, advancing your career or becoming an influencer. What it comes down to is if you don’t have a powerful and visible personal brand, you are putting yourself at a disadvantage in almost every aspect of your professional, business, and personal life.  Personal branding has become a requirement for anyone looking to grow their business, get a better job, get noticed by the press, take your career to the next level or meet new, high-quality colleagues.

6 Reasons Why Personal Branding is a Non-Negotiable

1. Image is Everything

And no I’m not talking only about colorful logos and Instagram grids when I say this… But you must understand that Personal branding is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands.

Which means branding is the ongoing process of establishing a descriptive image or impression in the mind of others about yourself.

Your brand is what others say about you when you leave the room.

Let me repeat…  Your brand is what others say about you when you leave the room.

So your brand is an intangible relationship between you and your prospective clients … or anyone consuming your authentic content whether in written, audio or visual form.

When you think image and think of your brand colors, logo and Lightroom preset, that is your brand identity which is the tangible visible design language that appeals to the senses of your clients.

So personal branding is the way you communicate all those characteristics and build your reputation. This is why it’s such a non-negotiable when it comes to your business and your life.

Everyone has a unique personal brand, whether you know it or not. But what you should be striving for is a powerful, attractive, consistent and visible personal brand.

And how you do this is with an online AND in-person authentic display of the engaging aspects of your professional and personal activities and interests. Meaning, you are sharing WHO you are, WHAT you like, and WHY you love what you love.

2. Your Attraction Increases

If you are showing up online as your authentic self and your visual language is attractive you will have a compelling personal brand… people find you interesting and desirable.

Meaning this attraction will lead to hundreds of new connections and followers and your appeal increases.

It happens everyday… people find my profiles online… Skim my photos, read or listen to my content, if I add value to them, they will follow me, want to know more about me and then eventually seek what products I have that can fill a need of theirs.

But if my visual identity is not appealing to them… they won’t even get to my content.

“Experts estimate it takes less than one-tenth of a second for someone to make an impression of you from your photo. They don’t bother reading your profile or digging deeper if their initial impression is negative.” – Claire Bahn, CEO of Online Profile Pros

I do this all the time when I get new followers on Instagram. I’ll quickly check out their profile pic, bio, and their last dozen or so feed photos.. and if it’s not attractive to me… I don’t both to read their content and thus won’t follow them.

If your brand is attractive you can gain the attention of your niche audience!

And even if those readers never purchase a thing from you – you are still able to add value to their lives. A powerful personal brand doesn’t only benefit you professionally but you can make lifelong friends because of it.

When you are interesting and people can find and notice you, they will connect with you on a personal level.

I’ve made dozens of great friendships simply with my brand presence. Readers who have become fond of my authenticity and visual presence, starting watching my free branding trainings online, followed my social posts, and then reached out to me personally to connect.  And I’ve become friends with many of them.

Heck one of the first business owners who connected with me as a stranger is now the Content Manager for my business.

3. Opportunity Finds You

When your personal brand is attractive, then potential clients and even companies looking to hire, will find you and reach out to you. This happens to me on a daily basis from the exposure my personal brand has given me. People will slide into my dm and ask me if I offer xy or z products or courses and how they can work with me because they love my visual identity so much.

I’ve had boutiques reach out to me for influencer gigs, been asked to train sales teams, and be a guest on podcasts.

What this means is that when you are out there with your powerful and attractive personal brand good things happen when your digital footprint gets bigger.

There have been too-many-times-to-remember when simply being noticed for one part of my brand caused something else to happen and a new opportunity to arise.

So show up and opportunity can find you.

4. You Control the Content

This is why I love love love creating content. I get to shape the perception of my brand by doing so.

When people search for you or topics related to your work or industry, and they find high-quality content, they’re much more likely to turn to you as an expert over a competitor.

That’s why I believe so highly in using a full media mix approach to marketing… I want my content to show up everywhere.

I teach all these business tactics inside the SCALE stage of my Stay in your Lane Brand Method because I truly believe potential clients will think much highly of me over another branding educator if my content is high-quality, professional and consistent.

And even if you don’t own a business and use decide to use personal branding to up your application efforts for getting a new job… The same goes for applicants. An HR rep comparing two candidates is more likely to select the one that has lots of high-quality content online, beyond whatever he or she has shared on a resume.

Every company is searching for social profiles before every hire. Make sure the content you are putting out in the digital space is the content you want to be known for.

5. Power of In-Person Networking

Think about the events you attend or new people you meet at networking events. When you meet someone who seems like someone you could build a business relationship with and then go sneak off to the restroom to look them up on social media and you see that their profile is totally off whack from how they just came off to you in person – that is going to throw up a red flag. Right?

So what this means to you is if you have a compelling personal brand online to back up how you come across as in real life… people will find you interesting and desirable and are willing to connect with you.

People are going to look at your profile, scan it for validity, if they see you as someone with value, they will follow you and want to know more about you.

6. Gain Confidence

Lastly, as you develop your personal brand you are going to be required to find your authentic voice. Meaning no more copying and pasting what other people are using in their captions and taking it as your own words.

Creating original content in your authentic voice is a large part of your branding strategy and the more and more you put it out into the world the more and more you’ll gain confidence.

When you use your voice, and your audience starts to react positively, that builds loads of self-confidence and self-esteem and allows you to show up and add value in a meaningful, more purposeful way.

I remember when I started doing weekly live videos just a couple years ago and I was scared out of my mind. But the more and more I did them, the more I could loosen up and weave more of my personal story into the topic, the more I became confident in my teachings and the more I was gaining the attention of my audience.

In the end, this is why Personal Branding is a Non-Negotiable

Whether you are trying to build your business, find a job, get noticed by the press, impress vendors/companies, attract influential contacts or simply to make new impactful friends, a powerful, attractive and visible brand is non-negotiable.

I truly believe it’s the key foundation to building your reputation, credibility and most importantly, finding success in your professional and personal life.

And never forget the golden rule of building a successful personal brand … authenticity rules.
