Podcast Show Notes

The mind is a powerful thing, isn’t it?! With the mind’s unlimited potential, you can generate anything you desire by letting it do what God created it to do. But it’s also an excuse-making engine when we program it with a negative belief system.

When you do this, your mind will continually try to convince you not to take action and make positive changes you know are good for you.

For example, eating healthier, exercising consistently, or working on your business. You know these are all things you SHOULD be doing to be healthier, stronger, and more successful.

But you don’t because you aren’t programming your subconscious mind to believe they are good for you.

Simply stated, when you program your mind with limiting beliefs or excuses, this blocks these positive changes from taking place in your life.

The functions of Your subconscious mind

Brenda Berg writes that “Your subconscious mind makes up around 95% of your brainpower and handles everything your body needs to function correctly, from eating and breathing to digesting and making memories.

The subconscious mind isn’t creative, it doesn’t understand jokes, but it can remember everything you have ever done, said, or witnessed.

The remaining 5% of your brain, the conscious mind, has the sole purpose of interacting with the physical world.

However, by taking control of your subconscious mind, by becoming aware and in sync with it, you can be sure to take back control of your life and achieve anything you want to.

This is because when your subconscious mind and your conscious mind is working together to achieve a common goal, you can BELEIVE that it will happen.”

Programming your mind

So what does this mean for you?

It means your belief system or programming is what sets you apart from other people.

The quote from Henry Ford says it best “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

We just need to program your subconscious mind to think you have the power to make positive changes, and your conscious mind will believe it too.

Your belief system is one reason why I love personal branding and the core foundation of it. Everyone has different belief systems that guide their decisions and thus the ability to influence other people.

And when used correctly, this is what sets you apart from everyone else in your social feed, industry, or market.

Simply, when you can start to understand that everyone on this planet has a belief system to guide their thinking, reasoning, and functions, you can begin to reprogram the mind how you wish.

The choices we make and the beliefs we have been programmed with separate us from who we are now and the successful individuals we want to become.

So rather than believe the negative excuses and beliefs currently programmed in your mind… you want first to be aware of them and then re-program them to benefit you instead of hindering you.

The 5 Excuses Stalling Your Business Growth Today

Based on my conversations with hundreds of business builders over the past decade and by knowing what’s held me back in the past, here are The 5 Excuses Stalling Your Business Growth Today.

Excuse #1: I can’t do it as well as her.

Think about the last time you started a sentence with “I can’t” – was it today, yesterday, or last week?

You are saying I can’t because you compare your situation and obstacles to someone else who’s already completed the positive change you want.

Whether you are learning social media functions, new marketing techniques, how to write and format a blog post, or use a new email platform – things will be difficult at first.

But complicated doesn’t mean you can’t stick to the positive change you are making.

It merely means it’s difficult, but you are capable of overcoming difficulties. You can do hard things.

You simply need to believe in yourself enough to take another step or stumble. You need to program your subconscious mind to tune out anything that starts with “I can’t.”

One way to do this is to realize that your insecurities and your confidence have something in common. They both ask you to believe in something you can’t see.

Right?! You simply have to decide which one you want to think.

  • I can run a marathon without being as fit as her.
  • I can publish a successful blog without being as good of a writer as her.
  • I can launch my business without a supportive spouse as she has.
  • The next time you start to speak, “I can’t” – I want you to find someone no more capable than you who’s already done it.

“If she can do it, so can you!” – she had the same difficulties as you but didn’t allow her subconscious mind to stop her. She had similar obstacles as you but did it anyway.

The only person who can say to you “I can’t” is you.

Excuse #2: I don’t have enough time to make positive changes.

The blatant truth here is you write your own destiny through the choices you make every day.

Which means you become what you repeatedly do.

I believe it is more important to know the path you are taking and why than to get there quickly.

If you repeatedly say growing your business is a priority, but you don’t have enough time to build it …then you are most likely spending too much time on urgent things and not enough time on important things.

So, in the last week, when did you choose to do something else instead of working on your business?

What was so urgent you set aside something important to you as growing your business?

Urgent tasks might be folding laundry, putting the dishes away, reorganizing your closet, or labeling your new pantry containers.

Yes, I, too, have been sucked into the home edit trap. I know what your urgents have been! #busted

When you can prioritize your list and do the most important things first, you can silence your subconscious mind telling you that you don’t have enough time to grow your business.

Because you have control and you do have the time.

An excellent book for reference is The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. I’ll link it in the show notes – but it’s a great book about priorities and doing the ONE Thing first.

Excuse #3:  I’ve already failed too much.

To that, I’d say great, “You’re human like me!”. I fail all the time.

It’s true.

If you genuinely believe all the successful people you are comparing your business to haven’t failed, then you are living in a bubble of untruth.

Are you having a break down because you didn’t get any new clients this week, only five people liked your last post, or no one showed up live for your webinar? … that fine.

Rest, reset, and pick yourself back up. Just don’t stay broke down.

I’ve read that…

  • Mistakes make us wiser.
  • Failures help us grow.
  • Hope keeps us going.
  • And love is the reason we’re alive.
  • So keep learning, loving, and living.

As Winston Churchill once said, “Success is never final; failure is never fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.”

Nothing could be closer to the truth.

Why my setbacks didn’t hinder my growth

My story goes the same way. Over the past 20 years, I’ve had businesses close, leave me in five-figure debt, and flop.

But those setbacks didn’t keep me from giving up on business ownership. This is because I never told myself, “I failed too much to try again.”

I simply learned new lessons that I didn’t know before. I also strengthened my belief system and reprogrammed my subconscious mind in the meantime.

And that’s precisely how I’ve reached the success I’ve had thus far.

The strongest, most productive people aren’t the ones who always succeed. They are the ones who don’t give up when they fail.

So when you think about quitting, I want you to dig deep and think about how far you’ve come. What are all the things you now know that you didn’t’ know before?

There are several of them.

Many times through lessons of failure, you are closer than ever to unearthing your breakthrough. But you quit too soon to realize how close you actually were.

Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit. So don’t quit on your dream; simply reverse, pivot, make some necessary adjustments, and keep going.

Excuse #4:  It’s too late.

To be blunt… nothing is too late until your heart stops beating. So since you are listening to this podcast right now – congrats, you are alive! Which means it’s not too late for you.

You’re not too old, too out of shape, too broke, too busy, too ANYTHING to move your life forward.

Where you end up tomorrow is dependent on your daily attitude and response today.

And it’s never too late to change your attitude about something you think you can’t change.

Simply decide to move forward despite your age, weight, or income without excuses or regrets.

>>> Ep 49: 4 Signs That It’s Time To Start Your Passion Business With Daniele Mineck

Excuse #5: I can do it later.

Well, of course, you can do it later. You keep saying later – but later never comes.

In the last month or six – when have you said out loud or to yourself that later would be a better time than now to start a positive change?

I’ll take a stab and say the answer is probably more than you’d like to admit.

  • I’ll start a blog later.
  • I’ll hire a logo designer later.
  • I’ll learn about using Instagram for my business later.
  • I’ll read that business book later.
  • I’ll write out my social captions later.
  • I’ll set up my email sequence later.

The fact is you want to see your business grow… but you are letting excuses get in the way of making that happen right now and later.

Your “later self” is going to feel the same limitations your present self feels.

I can only say this to you because it’s happened to me.

When you allow yourself to slack off now, you’re building a habit of procrastination in other parts of your life and making it less likely that your later self will be more disciplined.

So I want you to stop making excuses for why you can’t get it done and start focusing on all the reasons why you must make it happen right now.

Most great things in life don’t happen by chance; they happen by choice.

It’s time to choose an extra hour of work over an hour of Netflix later tonight or to decide to get up an hour earlier to get your workout in.

You never know what’s possible until you risk finding out.

There is only one thing that makes your aspirations and goals completely unlikely to achieve in the long run, and that is your lack of action today.

My friends, excuses will always be there, but the opportunity won’t.

>>> Ep 48: How To Prevent Social Media From Impacting Your Mental Health

recap

So to recap, here are the 5 Excuses Stalling Your Business Growth today that you are going to rewire out of your subconscious moving forward.

  1. I can’t do it as well as her rewired into I can do it as well as her.
  2. I don’t have enough time to make positive changes rewired into I have enough time to make positive changes.
  3. I’ve already failed too much rewired into I haven’t failed enough
  4. It’s too late rewired into It’s never too late.
  5. I can do it later rewired into I can do it now.

I hope this helps you acknowledge your subconscious mind’s power.  Use it to take the first step toward making a positive change and reaching your goal of obtaining whatever you want.

  • You first have to be aware of what you want.
  • The next step is to desire what you want.
  • The last step involves programming your new beliefs.
  • It is your beliefs that will allow the change to occur.

The technique to control your subconscious mind

Here’s a technique I have read on how to control subconscious mind:

1. Hold your breath, thinking strongly of what you want your subconscious mind to be. Holding your breath creates an emergency which is when the subconscious mind comes into action. As you strongly think, it receives signals and can be molded.

2. Follow more with your conscience, not your subconscious.

3. There is a saying “when you start doing things continuously for 40 days, you will continue to do it without much effort”. As you repeatedly do something, your subconscious mind records that action and continues to play it at the time specified.⠀⠀⠀

What to know about your mind

It’s important to know that your mind wants comfort… it doesn’t want change, discomfort, and new pressures. So it does everything it can to keep you at ground zero.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Even if that means sacrificing your happiness, success, and long term growth.

But inside, you really don’t like being at ground zero. You want to be more fit, healthy, and successful.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So what it comes down to is that you must stop adopting the self-limiting beliefs that are sabotaging your growth efforts.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You must put a stake in the ground and choose your dreams over your excuses.⠀⠀⠀

So let’s call it for what it is.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • NO, more laziness.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • NO more quick fixes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • NO more blaming others.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • NO more procrastination.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • NO more negativity.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • NO more, “I’ll do it, tomorrows.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • NO more of these excuses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Truth be told, if you really want something, you will find a way. If you don’t, you will find an excuse… and then you will live with that excuse every day of your life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And even though I’d love to tell you there is … there are no shortcuts to any place worth going.

As Einstein once said, “Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work.”

You can do it as well as her; you can do hard things, you do have enough time, no it’s not too late, and yes, you can do it now.
