Podcast Show Notes

Coming into the holiday season, it’s common to see people express more gratitude for the people and blessings in their personal life. These include family, friendships, and basic physiological and safety needs. As we know, cultivating gratitude helps you see what’s there instead of what isn’t.

Have a hard time being grateful?

And even if you have a hard time with being grateful  – you can build up your gratitude muscle – yes, that’s a thing! By taking part in gratitude activities.

Whether you lack grateful genes, a grateful brain, or you have a few personality flaws – writing in a gratitude journal or sending gratitude letters can build your gratitude muscle and, in return, can change your brain activity.

Filling your psychological needs

But how do we, as business owners, create this same sense of gratitude within our workplace or workspace?

The same gratitude we give to our family members – we want our clients, employees, and teammates to feel appreciated, valued, respected, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

As I mentioned in episode 38, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology, embracing a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as levels within a pyramid.

One of the middle psychological needs is belonging and love.  This hierarchy explains why the act of gratitude in business is especially significant. Because it satisfies the psychological need to feel a sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves.

Gratitude in your business can improve team performance, boost compassion, enhance self-esteem, reduce stress, and keep you healthy.

4 simple ways you can start cultivating gratitude within your business

Those are plenty of reasons to keep gratitude a business priority if you ask me. Even if you are a company of one.

So I’m going to share with you four simple ways you can start cultivating gratitude within your business. No matter how big or small it is.

1. Reply to every direct message and comment on your social media profiles.

A simple “Thank you for your comment!” goes a long way to recognize someone for their time.

Plus, replying to comments left on your posts serves more than just the purpose of being polite. As it can help boost your post to increase your business’s visibility.

2. Recognize your clients and staff as much as possible.

Simple ways to do this could be to:

  • share a post of theirs to your stories,
  • tag them in your post,
  • include them in your weekly email,
  • or have them as a guest on your blog or podcast.

When we recognize one another, it creates a ripple effect and inspires the person we’ve acknowledged to give that feeling to someone else… leading to a swell of happiness and energy.

3. Give gifts to your teammates, employees, or best clients.

This gift can be a:

  • simple handwritten card
  • or a thoughtful candle,
  • or a self-care kit that your recipient would be pleased to receive and use!

This gift should show that you are paying attention to them, and you appreciate their constant in your business.

4. Offer words of praise every chance you get.

Let’s face it – we don’t become successful without the help of many encouraging hands along the way.

Every time you get a great idea, a boost of confidence, or a simple smile from someone – tell them THANK YOU! Be specific for what you are thanking them for so they know their actions are positively affecting someone.

How to show gratitude everyday

Many people come in and out of your business every week. The more you can acknowledge and appreciate them, the more you and they can live a healthier, stress-free, and confident life.

  • One way to do this is to create a folder in your Notes App. When someone comes into your business that you can recognize and show gratitude toward – write their name down and the date and experience for which to thank them for.

Many studies show how expressing gratitude helps your business thrive. So while you are creating new habits for 2021 – go ahead and add cultivating gratitude a part of your list for personal and business.

Plus, Gratitude changes the giver, not just the receiver.

While we tend to think about this gratitude gesture from the receiver’s perspective, it’s just as important to look at this as a way to inspire us as the giver.
