What are the pros to working from home?

The idea of working from home and controlling your schedule sounds great until it’s 3pm, your kids are coming home from school and you are wondering what you accomplished in your business today.

There are pros and cons to working from home, just like anything else in life.

On the one hand, you have complete control over your work environment and hours – no need for pesky office politics or white noise.

On the other hand, you aren’t as productive as if you were in an office setting because there are so many distractions – no coworkers or in-person clients to keep your eye on the ball. And you might be tempted to take a nap during downtime.

The key is to balance these distractions so that you can stay focused and get more done in less time. If you’re going to be successful working from home, then you must learn how to manage your time effectively and create a clean and quiet workspace.

These tips will help ensure that you’re getting ahead of your work by staying focused and avoiding distractions.

6 Time management tips when working from home:

Whether you’re an entrepreneur or your company allows you to work from home, it’s important to follow time management tips to improve your productivity.

Working from home can be time-consuming, but these time management tips will help maximize productivity and minimize time wasted.

Tip #1: Time Yourself

One of the best ways to manage your time is to track how you spend it. Start by timing how long it takes you to do specific tasks, like answering emails or browsing the internet. This will help you be more efficient and avoid multitasking, which can lead to less productivity.

TOOL! Inside CORE Brand Marketing Boutique, we use a plugin called Clockify. This will help you get an idea of how long certain tasks actually take. It’s easy to lose track of how long you’ve been working from home if there isn’t anyone else around.

Tip #2: Schedule your day like an office job

If you work the same hours every weekday, then write them into your day planner or calendar. This will prevent wasted time and help to maintain focus. I have my days set up to work 10 am – 2 pm, so those are my four solid work hours. Anything before or after that is bonus work hours.

Tip #3 – Keep a notepad and a pen for jotting down ideas

Ideas can come at any time, but it’s necessary to capture them as you have them. For example, your kid will often need something from the store, or you’ll realize that you forgot to pay the water bill yesterday. It happens!

TOOL! So instead of opening a new tab on your browser and going down a rabbit hole, I use the Rocketbook reusable notebook to jot down random ideas and add them to my to-do list.

Tip #4 – Do what works for you

If you’re a morning person, start your workday at 5 am. If you like to take a break for lunch, then schedule that in too. The key is to find what works for you and stick to it as much as possible.

Tip #5 – Take breaks

It’s important to get up and move around every once in a while, especially if you’re working from home.  Even if it’s just to grab a drink, do some household chores, or go for a walk while listening to a podcast. You can’t stay focused the entire day, no matter how much you like your job. Wearing an Apple Watch really helps with this as it reminds you to stand and take a minute to breathe.

Tip #6 – Shut off all distractions

Turn off your phone and shut down your email notifications if they’re distracting you from work. Try an app like Freedom to block social media sites (like Facebook) or other time-wasting websites for a set amount of time. I like to even keep my phone face down so I can’t reach over and tap to check notifications.
